In response to the exponentially growing demand for well trained post-graduates in Mathematics from Institutions with professional excellence, the Karnataka State Open University is providing a Two year semester based M.Sc. Mathematics Degree Programme (Two Semester per year-Total Four Semester). The programme is specially designed for Teachers, Engineers, computer Scientists and others who are interested in Mathematics but could not pursue a Master degree programme in Mathematics for various reasons. The Karnataka State Open University’s M.Sc. Mathematics programme is a tightly scheduled, highly structured, and application oriented.
 
Mathematics is as old as mankind and civilization. Mathematics is advancing at spectacular rate and it is about logical analysis, decision making, deductions, precision and is also about quantity, space, change and structure. Mathematics has a pervasive influence on our everyday lives, and contributes to the wealth of the country. The curriculum is framed using time tested and Internationally well-known books and is also based on the feed back from the best programmes available in our country. The curriculum includes different branches of mathematics that have a wide range of practical applications such as Algebra, Analysis, Mathematical Modeling, computer programming, Mathematical Statistics and Operation Research. The curriculum is so developed that the study of mathematics can satisfy a wide range of interests and abilities. It develops the imagination; it trains in clear and logical thought.
 
Those who qualify in M.Sc. Mathematics are in fortunate position of having a wide range of career choices. The abilities to use logical thought, to make deduction from assumption, to use advanced concepts are all enhanced by a Mathematics degree course. It is for this reason that Mathematicians are increasingly in demand. With M.Sc. Mathematics degree, one should be able to turn his/her hand to Finance, Statistics, Engineering, Computers, Teaching or Accountancy with a success not possible to other post graduates.

We are providing career counselling and coaching to the students enrolled with Universities recognized by Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India, All the state Governments, University Grant Commission (UGC) and Association of Indian University (AIU).

Program DurationProgram Duration:

The minimum duration of the M.Sc programme is 'Two' years and the maximum duration is 'Four' years from the years of the year of Admission to the Programme. The candidates who do not complete the Programme within four year will have to seek fresh admission.


Other InformationOther Information:

  1. The maximum duration for the completion of M.Sc Programme shall not exceed two times the duration (Six years) of the particular Programme, from the date of admission to the Programme (including the year of admission).
  2. Candidates who discontinue their studies for more than four academic years after joining a Programme shall have to seek fresh admission.

Evaluation ProcedureEvaluation Procedure:

Evaluation for each course covers two aspects:

  • Internal assessment (IA) through assignments with a weightage of 10%
  • Term-end examination having a weightage of 90%

AssignmentsAssignments:

Students are required to submit assignments according to the prescribed schedule before the termend examination. In case, the student has not submitted the assignment within the prescribed date, the result of such candidate will be declared on the basis of the theory marks only.


Master's Preparatory Programme (MPP) Master's Preparatory Programme (MPP) :


Additional details:
Master's Preparatory Programme (MPP) is compulsory for students admitted under Regulation-I. The students will be supplied with master lessons in 10 blocks giving a bird's eye view of the cognate subject in which they are admitted to Master's Degree Programme.Further details are as follows.
a) Graduates who have not studied cognate subject and taken admission for M.A / M.Com Programmes are required to undergo MPP Examination.
b) The Candidates will be supplied 10 blocks of lessons at the time of admission. These lessons contain information about the cognate subject which they have chosen for M.A Degree.
c) MPP Examination will be objective type (multiple choice questions). The Exam will be held at the end of the M.A examinations, 2012. Total marks will be 100 for the subjects of M.A/M.Com degree programme.
d) MPP Study enhances the knowledge of the students besides increasing job opportunities. This Course is introduced to bring in All India Standard for M.A/M.Com degree provideed under Open University Scheme.
e) Candidates applying for MA-MCJ under Regulation – I need not appear for MPP if they have passed Diploma in Journalism course from KSOU or any recognised University or Institute.

Admission QualificationAdmission Qualification:

Admission to M.Sc Degree Programmes is made under two Regulations

Regulation-I
Candidates who have not studied the cognate subject in the (three years) bachelors' degree programmes are eligible to seek admission to any Post Graduate degree programme under Regulation- I, provided such candidates shall qualify in the Master Preparatory Programme (M.P.P) Examination in the concerned subject conducted by the University.
Regulation-II
A pass in the qualifying examination i.e., (B.Sc in math) for admission to M.Sc is one of the conditions of eligibility in the case of candidates applying under Regulation II.

Classification of Successful Candidates :
Upon successful completion of entire program a candidate shall be placed with a class label based on his/her performance through out programme. The table summarizes the classification rules.

Award of Degree:

Students will be eligible to get their degree certificates of M.Sc. Mathematics after successful completion of their academic programme. They will have to apply to the Register (Evaluation) along with the prescribed fee at the time of convocation to get their degree certificates. However they may be issued a provisional degree certificates, on application, soon after the announcement of the final result.
